This is a review of the abridged audiobook version of The Brass Verdict by Michael Connelly and narrated by Peter Giles. This fast moving audiobook is skillfully narrated

The Brass Verdict by Michael Connelly, follows defense attorney, Mickey Haller, after he inherits a major case from a colleague who has recently been murdered. This case entails him defending a famous Hollywood producer who has been accused of murder. The high profile case is one that puts Mickey Haller into the public eye.

Michael Connelly brings one of his other well known characters, the LAPD detective Harry Bosch, into the plot to investigate the death of Mickey Haller's colleague and they find themselves working together. As the plot develops, Michael Connelly introduces many plot twists and turns, keeping the listener guessing until the end.

Audiobook Narration

The book is narrated by Peter Giles, whose strong reading of the book keeps the plot moving at a steady pace. Peter Giles introduces less characterization into his reading of the book than is found in some other audiobooks, however this did not detract from the clarity of the reading nor did it make it difficult to follow the different characters within the plot.

Abridged Version

This abridged version of The Brass Verdict had a total playing time of about six and a half hours. This compares with the unabridged version at eleven and a half hours. As part of the abridgment, different strands of the plot have been narrowed down or streamlined.

The abridging of the book has been well done, with no loose ends or unexplained plot twists, but the listener may sense that there is more going on 'behind the scenes.' There are also parts of the plot that listeners may feel that they want to explore further, for instance the relationship between the two main characters. This slight frustration, however, needs to be balanced against the fact that this is a shorter listen than the unabridged version.

The Brass Verdict is an audiobook that will appeal to people looking for a good fast paced story which is led by strong characters. To really appreciate Michael Connelly's skills as a story teller and writer of exciting fiction then perhaps the unabridged version of The Brass Verdict would be a good option.
